Hanoi's industry is number-one in the north and number-two in the country. It contributed 7.42 percent to the national gross domestic product (GDP), 9 percent to the total industrial production value, and 15.39 percent to the total budget collection in 2005.
In 2001-2005, the industrial sector in Hanoi increased an average of 20.32 percent annually

In the last years, the cityˇ¦s industrial sector has actively boosted international integration, which has stimulated rapid industrial growth and economic restructuring.

The sector has progressively modernized production and changed the economic structure from industry-agriculture to industry-service-agriculture-forestry-fisheries. In 2001-2005, the industrial sector increased an average of 20.32 percent annually. Major industries such as textiles-garments, mechanical engineering, iron-steel, chemicals, electronics, electricity, and information technology grew fairly rapidly and accounted for increased percentages of total industrial production.

To grow steadily, bring into play the potential, and continue to be a growth engine, in the short run, the cityˇ¦s industrial sector must develop focusing on the manufacture of products that have found a marketplace and can compete with foreign imports. It is expected that the sector will catch up with the domestic need and increase exports and that key industries will take up 83 percent of total industrial GDP in 2010 compared with 76 percent in 2001. Industrial exports are expected to expand an average of 15-16 percent annually in 2006-2010 and account for 80 percent of the cityˇ¦s total export revenue.

In 2006-2010, the city intends to develop competitive products, support key industries, strengthen the linkages between the city and ministries, corporations and enterprises based in Hanoi, and accelerate the pace of renewing State-owned enterprises.
